Recruitment Vocabulary
Recruitment involves the selection of the best candidates to fill a position. How well do you know your recruitment terms?
Vocabulary
2. A ‘job interview or employment interview’ is an interview to determine whether an applicant is suitable for a position of employment
The human resources department is in charge of conducting job interviews
to fill vacancies in the company.
2. A ‘vacancy’ is an available position, a job opening.
The sales director has just retired, so we now have a vacancy for this
position.
3. A ‘recruitment program’ is a set of activities put together for the purpose of filling a vacancy.
We have to come up with a recruitment program every year that addresses
the company's changing needs.
4. ‘ Pre-employment screening’ is the act of filtering or sorting through candidate profiles and applications received for a vacancy to determine whom to invite for a job interview.
We have to do extensive pre-employment screening before setting up
interviews.
5. ‘Online recruitment’ is the use of the Internet to find suitable candidates for a vacancy.
We rely on online recruitment to fill vacancies as it can be more
cost-effective than print advertising.
6. ‘Job market’ is the demand for employment, or job availability.
The country has a healthy job market with many suitable candidates
looking for work.
7. A ‘recruitment agency’ is a company that specializes in searching for candidates to fill vacancies for other companies.
We sometimes work with a recruitment agency to speed up the process of
filling a vacancy.
8. ‘Referral’ is the act of referring or forwarding an applicant for employment, or referring a matter to an appropriate agency. The word may also be used for a person who is referred for employment.
We encourage referrals from current employees who have a better
understanding of who would fit in best with our corporate culture.
9. ‘Competencies’ are abilities or capabilities desired in candidates for a vacancy.
We had to reject the applicants who didn't have the competencies to work
closely with upper management and hold high responsibility for our production.
